Commarque is located near a source that has attracted men since prehistoric times. His first legendary lord is Bovon, who fought the Saracens in the time of Charlemagne.
During the XIIth century, when Garin and then Radulphe de Commarque were Abbots of Sarlat, several noble families built towers. The fortified village was born with its troglodyte houses and its church. Two towers have survived: the one built by the Commarque family, and the one built by the Beynac family, masters of the seigneury from the 13th to the 18th century. Around 1380, Pons de Beynac enlarged the keep and the castle. During the Hundred Years War, Commarque was taken by treason by the English. The barons of Beynac having converted to Protestantism, the castle was besieged and taken by the King’s army in 1569. The last lord residing in Commarque died there in 1656.
A walk in the valley offers beautiful backgrounds on the large archeological overview of Commarque and the Laussel Castle that faces it. The tour finishes with the ascent of the Pons’s de Beynac vertiginous dungeon and a beautiful view of the entire preserved valley.
Castle of Beynac (XIIth & XVIIth Centuries)

Castle of Puymartin (XVth & XVIth siècle)
Located on a steep hill in the middle of the Périgord Noir, this castle was built during the 15th and 16th centuries in yellow Périgord stone, is entirely covered with slate. It overlooks the Beune valley between Sarlat and Les Eyzies. The nocturnes every Tuesday evening in summer from 8:30 p.m. Discover the legend of the White Lady in an original way.
Castle of Milandes in Castelnaud (XVth & XIXth Centuries)
Former residence and “nursery” of Joséphine Baker. A pleasantly designed garden surrounds the castle ; from the terrace, a superb view presents the park. A spiral staircase serves the different floors.
Falconry
This art, which existed long before the Middle Ages, lives again at the Château des Milandes. In the oldest tower of the castle, falconer accessories and many documents trace this ancestral practice. Rendezvous with these majestic hunting birds of prey (live birds). Novel: “Jacquou le Croquant”.
The gardens of the Eyrignac manor
The manor and its gardens take place 13km from Sarlat, North-East direction. It was built in the XVIIth century
The manor was built in the 17th century by Antoine de Costes de la Calprénède, on the ruins of the previous “Repaire Noble”, burnt down by the troops of the Grand Condé.
This house having always belonged to the same family, it thus remained in its original state. The French Gardens were created in the 18th century by Louis-Antoine-Gabriel de Costes de la Calprénède. Restored to their original condition by the current owner, Patrick Sermadiras de Pouzols de Lile, they are exceptional and their visit is worth a detour.
The Gardens of Marqueyssac in Vézac (9km from Sarlat)
It is one of the greatest successes of French gardens. On an area of 22 hectares, its 5 km of paths and 150,000 hand-cut boxwood are the work of several generations of the same family, installed in the castle since 1692.
A man left his mark on the site of Marqueyssac: Julien de Cerval. Passionate about Italian culture, he accentuates the picturesque beauty of the site by creating alleys at the foot of the cliffs, viewpoints, places of meditation and poetry. The visit to the park is arranged for the enjoyment of all ages. We discover the nature and the sites of Périgord, presented by the team of the castle of Castelnaud.
La Dordogne, une région riche en histoire et en découvertes !
La Dordogne se décline en quatre Périgords. Comme autant de saisons, ils vous offrent une grande diversité de paysages où il fait bon se promener tout au long de l’année.
Le Périgord Blanc s’étale le long de la Vallée de l’Isle. C’est un pays blanc car calcaire. Cette roche se retrouve dans les constructions et notamment la cathédrale Byzantine de Périgueux, sa capitale, qui fut une cité Romaine importante dont les vestiges sont toujours visibles.
Le Périgord Vert s’étend au Nord du département. Le parc Naturel Régional Périgord Limousin est un écrin de verdure parcouru par de nombreux ruisseaux le long desquels de nombreuses petites villes pleines de charme vous accueilleront.
Le Périgord Pourpre est au Sud, sur les côteaux de la vallée de la Dordogne. Il est regroupé autour de Bergerac et de ce vignoble réputé. Les Bastides, villages fortifiés sont nombreux et pleins de ce caractère qui fait la renommée d’un célèbre personnage : Cyrano de Bergerac.
Le Périgord Noir, quant à lui recèle un patrimoine exceptionnel avec les vallées de la Dordogne, de la Vézère, les Eyzies, capitale du monde de la Préhistoire, Sarlat, Ville d’art et d’histoire, Lascaux et tous les sites classés au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO.
